אִסְטְלִי, אִסְטוֹלִי, אִיסְ׳II f. (a corruption of אֶפִּיסְטוֹלִי q. v.) letter, dying injunction. Pl. אִסְטְלִיּוֹת. לִיאוֹת … Y.Sot.VII, 21d bot. וא׳ שנתן להם משה and (the stones containing) the dying injunctions of Moses (Deut. 27:8); (cmp. Bab. ib. 35b). Gen. R. s. 74 end Ar. (ed. a. Var. in Ar. אפיסטולי). Midr. Sam. ch. XI (ref. to the five verses 1 Sam. 4:13–17) הכן לא הוה ליה טופרין או חמשה איסטולין (read סופרין?) ממחינון חמשה אלאוכ׳ indeed so, not five pencils (writers?) or five messages could kill him, but over the news of the captured ark his neck was broken. (Others read אִיסְטִילִין (stili) styles used for writing on waxen tablets).
